1. Replace the “On/Off” Toggle With an Autonomy Spectrum
Binary AI controls are primitive.

It’s graduated autonomy.

Observe → The AI suggests but never acts.
Propose → The AI builds a plan, waits for approval.
Act with confirmation → Executes familiar tasks, pauses for irreversible steps.
Act within guardrails → Operates autonomously under predefined limits.
Different tasks have different blast radiuses.

Low risk.
Sending legal emails to enterprise clients?
High risk.
The UI must reflect that difference.
Trust is not binary.

2. Introduce Intent Previews Before Execution

That’s backwards.

4. Design for Reversibility
If autonomy increases, so must reversibility.

5. Define Your Product Constitution
As AI systems gain autonomy, every product needs non-negotiable rules.

More generation.
More automation.
More intelligence.
Now the competitive advantage is shifting to:

More clarity.
Better boundaries.
In a world of infinite generated output, the rarest resource is not intelligence.

They’ll be the ones that let users:
